Hi there,

You made it through the first week back to school! Even if it was a short week, you still deserve a pat on the back.

Whether you’re a fan of resolutions or not, you may find this week’s video interesting. It’s all about pushing beyond our mental limits - which is helpful in many areas of our busy lives.

Now, at the outset, let me say that I don’t want this video to be misconstrued. The intent is not to convince you (or your teachers) to simply work harder at everything. That’s a recipe for neglecting your mental health.

On the contrary, I like to think of this “40% Rule” as a way to bring better balance to my life. For example, I often feel tired. Sometimes it’s due to a lack of sleep, but most often, it’s because I’m focusing too much on one thing and neglecting other priorities. I might spend too much time focused on work instead of being active throughout the day. I might wind up in too many meetings and feel verbally exhausted at the end of the day, and have less energy to give my kids.

In these situations, it’s a good reminder that when my brain says, “I’m done,” I’m probably not actually done. I have more in the tank. I have more for work, more for exercise, more for my family, and more for myself. And, while my energy and time are not unlimited, sometimes there’s an arbitrary governor in my mind telling me to stop when I can keep going.

Let me know what you think of the video. At the very least, I hope it’s thought-provoking.

Mike
