Hi there,

Hopefully you all have recovered from the sugar-induced craziness around your buildings. May next week be more than mellow following the extra hour of sleep everyone will get tonight.

This week I have a rare video from … well, me. I don’t like to share personal stuff too often. (This video isn’t even public, but you can still share it with your teachers).

About two months ago, a brutal forest fire plowed through my wife’s childhood home. Thankfully, no one was injured, but it really changed the face of one of my favorite places on earth. A place that I often go to think through big life decisions.

It really made me think about some of the challenges I’ve been discussing with many of you lately. I talk with teacher and administrators all over the country and hear the frustration and desparation. I know that, especially given the recent data from the NAEP, it’s hard not to feel like everything has been lost and we’re starting from square one.

And yet, despite the last two years of struggle, there are always signs of new and unexpected growth. Let’s keep a look out …

(Pardon the spotty beard … we were away from home longer than expected:)
