Hi there,
As I mentioned in yesterday’s weekly email, I wanted to try something new this month. This is how I described it in my previous message:
Each month, I come across dozens of amazing videos, quotes, links, etc. that are awesome, but they don’t really fit the bill for our Saturday email. Some videos are too long. Some quotes are too wordy. Some resources are more for admin than teachers. Either way, it’s good stuff, but it remains locked away in my personal treasure box.
This email - which will happen as time allows and as I have stuff worth sharing - will include 5-10 links to things that may be interesting or helpful to school leaders.
Half of the links will always be free. The whole list will be available to paid subscribers.
If you like what I’ve got going on here, please do me a favor and share the newsletter with a colleague or two. Much appreciated!
1.) Tweet that had me rolling
2.) Video that your teachers will love
… but was probably a bit too much for the Saturday email.
3.) Book that made me tremble in fear … and turn every page
With over 26,000 five-star reviews on Good Reads, this book has proven its worth. Check it out here.
Candice Millard is a one of the most captivating non-fiction writers I’ve found. I couldn’t put this book down. If you read nothing but leadership books, I recommend you wade into these waters. You’ll get more insights than you’d ever expect and will be truly entertained in the process.
The story is both breathtaking and terrifying as it chronicles Theodore Roosevelt’s post-presedential attempt to descend an uncharted river through the South American rainforest. Offering a close glimpse of Theodore’s relationship with his son, Kermit, and his Brazilian team, Roosevelt’s stubborn pursuit of adventure and relentless loyalty to his comrades is on full display as he narrowly escapes death dozens of times.
Far from its outward appearance, the rainforest was not a garden of easy abundance, but precisely the opposite. Its quiet, shaded halls of leafy opulence were not a sanctuary but, rather, the greatest natural battlefield anywhere on the planet, hosting an unremitting and remorseless fight for survival that occupied every single one of its inhabitants, every minute of every day.
For an idea of just how tough this terrain can be, check out this clip from an HBO documentary, The Edge of the Earth - also worth checking out if you have the HBO app.
