Hey all,

Saturday once again. We made it! I hope it was a good week for each and every one of you.

I’m excited about this week’s email for multiple reasons.

It’s been a secret goal of mine to hit 8,000 subscribers by my birthday - which is Monday! If you’ve appreciated what I do (and want to get me a birthday present), I’d love a new guitar amplifier. Just kidding.

But, if you really want to show some love, you can share this somewhere. Maybe with a colleague, on social media, orrrrrrr … you could call up your old high school buddy who works in subway advertising and hook me up;) Whatever works!

Gotta hide that mug somehow.

I’d be very grateful to get 62 more subscribers this weekend! Can you help me out?? Thanks!

Now, on to this week’s content!

We’ve got some great stuff:

  • A nod to drama teachers in this week’s video (and a related bonus video)!

  • We’ll share one of the most important Weekly Emailable PD emails we’ve published so far. It’s on the controversial topic of consequences. It’s well-researched and bite-sized. I hope your teachers find it useful.

  • We have a great tool for anyone wanting to learn how to actually use AI a little more effectively but still feeling intimidated. You won’t want to miss this!

Enjoy!

SPECIAL: Bonus Video

Okay, so I was going down a Lin-Manuel Miranda video rabbit hole and also found this three-minute clip where he meets with students from the Bronx Theater High School. His advice to scholars on what to do when they feel like giving up is just too good. Perhaps your teachers could share it with students. Enjoy!

Weekly Emailable PD

Use in staff newsletters, emailable PD messages, etc.

This week, we’re tackling classroom consequences. Oh, boy.

In my experience, not a single topic generates more controversy amongst teachers than this one. Some will always find a consequence too lenient, others too harsh. It often feels impossible to “win.” So, we address this tension directly in order to keep it from distracting us from the real point: educating and empowering students.

In a few short slides, we get to the bottom of things through some well-researched advice on exactly what consequences should try to accomplish (hint: they’re not to punish kids) and why approaching this topic with the whole student (and the whole class) in mind is so critical. Shout out to the invaluable research of Richard Curwin, Allen and Brian Mendler, and Dr. Ross Greene for the horsepower behind this week’s content. And next week, we’ll provide some concrete examples of appropriate classroom consequences for elementary AND secondary. I hope your teachers love it!
